We compare the proposed 10 hour contract to the 2020 8 hour contract and the 2021 12 hour contract
Continuing our series evaluating the terms of the proposed "10 hour" contract with the Saratoga Springs Police Department.
Previously, our research determined that under the terms of the new deal, the SSPD would become the highest paid police force in the capital region even when including healthcare benefits.
Today, we will compare both the "8 hour" contract which as executed in 2020 and the "12 hour" contract which was established in 2021. Both the 8 and 12 hour contract expired in 2025.
For the purpose of our analysis we will continue to evaluate a hypothetical Patrol Officer with 10 years of experience and compare their total salary under the terms of each collective bargaining agreement.
Our study finds that a 10 year Patrol Officer working the swing shift would earn ~11% more under the terms of the 10 hour contract vs. the 8hr contract. The Patrol Officer working 3rd shift would earn ~10.4% more vs. the 8hr contract. Shift 2 Patrol Officer earns ~9% more in total salary and the Shift 1 worker earns ~6% more in salary.
When we compare the same Patrol Officer's total salary (as previously defined) under the terms of the 12 hour contract and compare that to their salary under the proposed 10 hour contract we find an increase of total salary of:
Swing Shift: ~7.8%
Shift 3: ~7.3%
Shift 2: ~6%
*Be advised that based on the terms of the 12 hour contract; Shift 1 workers remained on the 8hr schedule.*
Given that both the 8 hour and the 12 hour contracts did not expire until 2025, why is Commissioner Montagnino giving away such lavish increases in salary and what is the city taxpayer getting in return?
Perhaps more importantly, with a coming recession, high inflation, homelessness and other serious problems is now the time to enter into such an extravagant contract with the PBA?
